コミュニケーションと文法指導

  1. Give a 5-10 minute presentation on your problems in teaching grammar. Please prepare a brief handout.

Now I am teaching six lessons Grammar for three classes of students in the first grade of Hyogo Senior high school (twice a week per class).
Grammar lessons based on the grammar textbook titled 'Brushup your English grammar', published by CHART INSTITUTE. This textbook includes about twenty English model sentences without Japanese translation on the left side of the page, and the same number of exercises on the right side. Teachers are supposed to teach the grammatical points and translate sample sentences in Japanese on the left side, and to check the answers on the right side.
What is most serious in Grammar lessons is that they are boring, monotonous, and dictatorial. Since the page of each lesson is fixed, teachers tend to talk a lot in Japanese about the assigned grammatical topic. Students just listen to teachers' Japanese explanation, and sometimes answer their questions.
What is worse, the textbook itself never inspires students. Most of the sentences in the textbook are artificially made, and never provide the exciting experiment.
The reason why teachers do this style of lesson and students take it is, first of all, the college entrance examination. It is most effective both for teachers and students. Teachers don't need much preparations, and all students have to do is to check the answers, which is quite easy to do. Second, it is hard for teachers to change the lesson procedure. Since there are many exercises to answer, just cheking the answers takes most of the time, which is quite boring and monotonous.
I sincerely want to improve this situation, but I cannot find the way so far.
